Julie Carrier

Julie Carrier est professeure titulaire au département de psychologie de l’Université de Montréal, chercheuse au Centre d’études avancées en médecine du sommeil du CIUSSS-NIM et au Centre de recherche de l’Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal. Elle est la directrice scientifique du Réseau canadien sur le sommeil et les rythmes biologiques. En démontrant que le sommeil joue un rôle crucial dans la santé, autant psychologique que physique, la professeure Julie Carrier s’est imposée comme la figure de proue canadienne d’un champ d’études qui renferme encore bien des secrets. Ses travaux révèlent que la qualité du sommeil chez les personnes âgées de 50 à 60 ans peut prédire certaines maladies associées au vieillissement, comme l’Alzheimer, et bien plus. En créant le Réseau canadien sur le sommeil et les rythmes biologiques, qui regroupe une soixantaine de chercheurs de 19 universités canadiennes, Julie Carrier a positionné l’Université de Montréal et ses centres de recherche affiliés comme leader mondial en recherche sur le sommeil.

Les projets de recherche de Dre Carrier veillent à comprendre les mécanismes qui sous-tendent les effets du vieillissement sur les processus de régulation du sommeil et des rythmes biologiques. À évaluer les conséquences des changements du cycle éveil-sommeil au cours du vieillissement sur la plasticité cérébrale, l’apprentissage, la cognition et l’équilibre postural. À estimer les changements dans la sensibilité de l’oeil et du cerveau à la lumière dans le désordre affectif saisonnier. À évaluer l’impact du sommeil sur le développement émotif et cognitif.
