Dr Albert a complété sa formation à l'Université de Montréal avant d'entreprendre des formations complémentaire à l'Université McGill et à l'Université de Calgary et est médecin spécialiste en médecine interne et en soins intensifs depuis 2002 à HSCM. Il est également professeur titulaire de clinique au département de médecine de l'Université de Montréal.Il est chercheur régulier au CR de HSCM (maintenant CIUSSS-NIM) depuis 2004. Il est actuellement directeur du programme de soins intensifs à l'Université de Montréal.

Les activités de recherche du Dr Martin Albert portent sur les développements diagnostiques et thérapeutiques aux soins intensifs. Les projets de recherche conduits par l’équipe du Dr Albert abordent diverses questions liées à la pratique des soins intensifs dont l’utilisation de l’échographie ciblée comme méthode aidant à améliorer la réanimation des patients en choc, les modes de ventilation mécanique en particulier l’utilisation du mode NAVA, la recherche visant une meilleure compréhension de l’insuffisance rénale aiguë et la prise en charge des patients polytraumatisés et blessés médullaires. De plus, le Dr Albert s’intéresse également à ce qui a trait au support des donneurs d’organes.
